An activist art project
With the realisation that I was experiencing the hormonal turmoil of peri-menopause, I began exploring how to express both my own and other women’s physical and emotion states through visual art: sculpture, video and soundscape. Making the work is a positive way of coping with this upsetting and uncomfortable period in my life when, with children grown up, I had envisaged a time for myself, with energy and confidence. By sharing mine and other women’s stories I hope to provoke greater awareness and openness about the menopause, to make the invisible visible, to speak and be seen.
The art pieces serve as conversation starters as I seek to engage with audiences in public spaces. This interaction is as much part of the work as the pieces themselves. I am clear with people that I am not a menopause health expert but that I can share some knowledge and my own experiences and am interested to hear about theirs.
